Abstract
1,262,214. Endoscopes. GENITO-URINARY MFG. CO. Ltd. 27 Nov., 1970 [23 Dec., 1969], No. 62562/69. Heading ASR. A surgical endoscope includes a rigid tubular viewing stem 11 with an eyepiece 13 at its proximal end, an illuminating tube 12 surrounding the stem 11, at least one light emitting aperture at or near the distal end and means for introducing the light into the illuminating tube comprising a sleeve 15 with a light inlet branch 16 the sleeve 15 being rotatable on the stem 11. The sleeve 15 and branch 16 have, arranged annularly in the sleeve 16, a filling of glass-fibre filaments which conduct light from a light introducing cable to the iluminating tube 12. A flange 14 on the stem 11 has a semi-annular window 17a to receive the light from which it is transmitted down the stem via glass-fibre filaments housed between the stem 11 and tube 12. The stem 11 is eccentrically disposed in the tube 12 to facilitate packing the filaments. Moisture seals such as soft rubber rings 18 are provided between the sleeve 15 and the flange 14 and eyepiece 13 respectively. The distal end of the instrument may be angled to give a wider field of view. Detents may be provided between the stem and the collar e.g. a spring loaded ball inside the collar engaging with recesses in the stem.
