Abstract

1,262,199. Jointing by stamping; making electrical connections; shearing; metal strip feeds. GENSTAPE Inc. 21 July, 1969 [26 March, 1969], No. 36525/69. Headings B3E, B3Q and B3W. A method of attaching a connector to one or more wires comprises cutting a connector blank from a continuous strip of flat or profiled metal 10, Fig. 1, bending the blank into U-shape, Fig. 6 (not shown), crimping it about the wire, Fig. 8 (not shown), and repeating the operations to form further connections. Apparatus for performing the method includes two slides 26, 27 connected by links 22, 23 to a driving pin on a gear 20 which is driven, through a one-revolution clutch 5, by an electromotor 2. Slide 27 carries a crimping punch 30 and slide 26 bending bars 28, 29 for bending the blanks over a spring- biased pivoted anvil 35 having a cam edge 39 by which it is retracted clear of the punch as the latter pushes the blank into a crimping die 14. Shearing.-A face of the bending bar 28 has slots co-operating with guide ribs 43 on a guide block 41, the face terminating in a slotted shearing edge 54 which bends the blank as it shears it over the curved corner (55), Fig. 4 (not shown), of an insert 44 over which the strip is fed through .the block 41. After the shearing operation, the bars 28, 29 come to rest against the adjustable crimping die 14. Wire placed in the die is trimmed by a pivoted blade 53 biased by a spring 51 and operated by contact with the slide 26, Fig. 7 (not shown). Strip feeding.-This is done in steps by rotatable segments 18, Fig. 1, made resilient by slots 19 and driven from the one-revolution clutch. Carriers 12 for the segments 18 are adjustable to provide larger feed steps than necessary so that the strip buckles slightly after striking a stop 45, Fig. 2. Dies.-The end of the punch may be flat or concave with embossing ribs (58), Fig. 7 (not shown). Turntables.-If the wires are fed to the die by an indexable turntable (not shown), the die is retracted during indexing steps. Crimping.-If longitudinally-ribbed strip is used, producing ribs transverse of the wires, these may cut through insulation on the wires and obviate the need for stripping the insulation
