Abstract

1,262,179. Thread unwinding apparatus. K. I. J. ROSEN. 2 Oct., 1969 [14 Oct., 1968; 7 March, 1969], No. 48463/69. Heading D1J. In the thread storage and delivery device shown the thread F from the spool 3 is fed tangentially onto, and looped at least once around, a friction drive surface 9a of a driven drum 9. The thread drawn off by the drive surface 9a is fed via a pivoted hook 10 to a downwardly tapering cone surface 9b and thence to a storage cone section 9c on which the descending turns of yarn may accumulate in multiple layer form K. From the resulting single turn or multiple layer the yarn is drawn off axially. When the winding-on speed is greater than the draw-off speed of the thread, the multiple layer form K grows so rapidly that the slide cone 9b is no longer able to push the turns of thread downwardly. The maximum diameter of the slide cone 9b is greater than the diameter dl of the friction drive surface 9a. This ensures that when the turns of the thread are no longer sliding down the cone 9b, the thread is wound up by the cone 9b at a greater rate than it is supplied by the drive surface 9a. This results in the yarn loop around the hook 10 being tightened, as in Fig. 1, with the result that the hook 10 rocks and actuates a switch 6 to stop the motor driving the drum 9. When, subsequently, sufficient turns have been taken off via the eyelet 17, the loop around the hook 10 becomes slack, as in Fig. 2 (not shown), and the switch 6 is able to revert to the setting in which the motor driving the drum 9 is energized. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the drive surface 9a is in the form of a groove and the hook-shape 10 is re-placed with an eye. There is a disc brake 14 for the thread F between the spool 3 and the friction drive surface 9a.
