Indole and benzodiazepine derivatives are prepared by the following route: (R = C 1-4 haloalkyl, C 1-3 alkoxy-C 1-4 alkyl; R<SP>1</SP> = H, halogen, NO 2 ; R<SP>2</SP> = H, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, NO 2 ; R<SP>3</SP> = H, R; R<SP>4</SP> = alkyl, PhCH 2 ; X = halogen), optionally followed by salt formation. Beference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,179,124, 1,106,040 and 1,050,401.
