DI TASSI, BALLESTRAZZI E TOSARELLI]. 25 Feb., 1970 [26 Feb., 1969], No. 9090/70. Heading B5K. A device for welding and severing plastics films in a packaging machine comprises a welding and severing blade 15 and a counterwelding tool 8 mounted on a carriage 5 which is guided in horizontal ways 3, 4 and is provided with means to impart thereto a reciprocal motion of adjustable amplitude, vertical guides 13, 14 integral with the carriage 5 being provided for the blade 15 which is provided with means to impart thereto a reciprocation so as to bring the blade 15 towards and away from the tool 8. Articles wrapped in a continuous plastics film are fed continuously by a conveyer 1. The carriage 5 comprises plates 6, 7 connected by a transverse counterwelding bar 8 and three idle rollers 9, 10, 11 around which the belt 1 runs. Rollers 12 engage the guideways 3, 4. The blade 15 is provided with rollers 16 which engage in guide slots 13, 14. The blade 15 is heated electrically. A shaft 17 is rotated at a fixed ratio with respect to the speed of the belt 1 and carries cranks 19 connected by rods 20 to the blade 15. Springs 21 are inserted in the rods 20 to allow a restricted shortening or elongation of the rods. The shaft 17 also carries an eccentric 22 connected by a clevis 23 to a lever 24 connected to the shaft 25. The amplitude of the oscillation of the shaft 25 is adjustable by turning a screw 26 carried by the lever 24 and passing through a block 27 guided internally of the lever 24. The carriage 5 is connected to the shaft 25 by two pairs of toggles 28, 29. In operation, the stroke obtained with the rotary movement of the cranks 19 is larger than the stroke allowed to the blade 15 and the excess stroke is absorbed by the springs 21 so that the blade 15 remains in contact with the bar 8 for a reasonably long period.
