Abstract

126,103. Cross, R. April 3, 1918. Hydrocarbons, cracking. - Heavy hydrocarbons are converted into light hydrocarbons by distilling them under a pressure of 400-1000 lb. per sq. in., and passing the resulting vapours under the same pressure over and into contact with the cool, heavy hydrocarbons on their way to the still. The apparatus comprises a still 6 in which the oil, heated by circulation through a heated coil 16, vaporizes under pressure. The resulting vapours pass through a pipe 7 into a container 5, which is continuously sup. plied with cool oil by a pump 2, and from which the oil after it has taken up the heavier constituents of the vapours flows by a pipe 8 to the still 6. The requisite pressure is maintained by a valve 11 on the vapour outlet pipe 23. The distillation is usually effected at 300-450‹ C., and the pressure being 600 lb. per sq. in.
