Abstract

1,260,829. Unwinding. HITACHI Ltd. 18 Feb., 1970 [21 Feb., 1969], No. 7894/70. Heading B3E. A method of automatically aligning a coil comprises detecting a deviation of the centre of the coil with respect to the centre of a mandrel of an uncoiler when the coil has been located at the position of said uncoiler by a horizontal travel of a coil transfer car and then continuously moving the coil upward for alignment until the deviation becomes zero whereby the coil is automatically mounted on the uncoiler. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a coil transfer car 5 travelling on rails 7 which feeds the coil 1 horizontally to a rolling mill 14 so that the centre b of the coil and the centre a of a mandrel are vertically in alignment. In this position the centre of the coil is measured by a detecting roller 10 which contacts the coil at a predetermined distance S from the vertical coordinate Y passing through the centres a and b. The roller is mounted on a spring-loaded pivoted arm 11 and the vertical movement of the coil is connected by a device 13, such as a selsyn transmitter, in terms of a rotational angle # of the lever 11. The height Y3 of the centre b of the coil from the centre of the cradle rollers 3 on the lifter 2 is a function of # and also the height of the lifter 2 namely Y 1 can be obtained and controlled by the lifter cylinder 4 until the centres a and b are in alignment. Therefor the alignment of the coil can be obtained continuously even with the coil diameter changing progressively.
