Abstract

1,260,687. Making Ni-Si-Mg alloys. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. May 9, 1969 [May 16, 1968], No.23783/69. Headings C7A and C7D. Nickelsilicon-magnesium alloys, suitable for use in adding Mg to molten iron to produce spheroidal graphite cast iron, are made by plunging solid Mg through a layer of fluid slag into a melt of Ni containing 26-45% Si and 0-12% Fe which is at a temperature of no more than 1065‹C., to introduce 12-20% Mg into the bath which is then cast. The final alloy may also contain up to 5% Ca and/or rare earth elements and/or Y, up to 2% Cu, up to 1% Co, up to 1% Mn and up to 1% Al, together with 25-40% Si, 12-20% Mg and 0-12% Fe, the balance, apart from impurities, being Ni. Suitable slag material are Na Cl, Na 3 Al F 6 , Ca Cl 2 , Mg Cl 2 , Li F and soda-lime glass. The casting may be cooled at no more than 195‹C./hour down to 760‹C. in order to decrease the brittleness thereof. The melting may be effected in an induction furnace.
