Abstract

1,260,597. Bitumen coated article. J. CHABERT. 29 June, 1970 [30 June, 1969], No. 31393/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] An anti-corrosive strip for the protection of metallic members such as tubes, frames comprises a flexible support coated on both its sides with a composition comprising in admixture an oxidised bitumen and a fluid asphaltic oil. Preferably the mixture also includes a powder filler, e.g. silica, kaolin, micas, clays, dolomite or chalk and a fungicide, e.g. a chlorinated derivative of phenol. Suitable supports are fabrics or mats of synthetic fibres such as polyamides, polyimides or plastics materials which are flexible at 20‹C. and whose melting point is above 160‹C., or natural fibres such as cotton or jute fibres, or glass fibres. The anti-corrosive strip may be wound with the interposition of an intermediary which does not adhere to the bituminous coating such as a sheet of siliconed paper; or alternatively the self-adhesion of the strip may be prevented by coating the outer sides with an anti-adhesive composition constituted for example by micro-crystalline mineral waxes or products based on an elastomer optionally mixed with resins. The anti-adhesive composition may be based on low molecular weight poly-isobutylenes optionally mixed with resins. As shown in Figure 1 support 3 is immersed in vat 1 containing the molten bituminous composition maintained at 140‹C. The support passes as it emerges from the vat between two scraper rollers 6, rises vertically whilst being subjected to the action of fans 7, passes over two cooled cylinders 9 and 10 and then wound around spindle 11 at the same time as an anti-adhesive sheet 12.
