Abstract

A filter for homemade wine comprises a housing enclosing a filtering layer 21 of fibrous cellulose supported on a sheet 20 and shielded from inlet tube 15 by a layer 22 of foamed rubber or polyurethane, the housing having a valved air vent 16 and an outlet 13. The fibres 21 may be loose or contained in a porous envelope for easy replacement. Fig. 1 shows a two part housing of opaque or transparent polypropylene, the two parts snapping into ring 16a which supports sheet 20 of sintered polythene, nylon or polypropylene. Outlet spout 13 could screw on to lower part 11. An alternative housing is made in one part with detachable end closures. In use, fibres 21 are inserted dry and wetted with water, spout 13 is closed and air drawn from vent to start a siphon action from an overhead reservoir, and the housing is completely filled with liquid before the vent is closed and filtration begins. The layer 22 prevents the initial flow of liquid breaking up layer 21. The housing above the layers 21, 22 may be filled with coarse fibres to effect preliminary filtration. One proprietary filter material for layer 21 comprises cellulose fibres plus a quantity of asbestos and diatomaceous earth.
