Abstract

1,259,727. Railway vehicle bogies. GENERAL STEEL INDUSTRIES Inc. 10 Aug., 1970 [6 Oct., 1969], No. 38359/70. Heading B7L. A four-wheel, two-axle railway vehicle bogie comprises a pair of transversely extending side frames 7L and 7R mounted at their ends on the axles 2, 3, each of the side frames 7L and 7R having intermediate its ends a transverse transom 13L or 13R extending over the opposite side frame, transverse axis pivot bearing means, e.g. hemispherical bosses 25L, 26R, supporting the transoms 13L, 13R respectively on the upper surfaces 21R, 21L respectively of the opposite side frames intermediate the ends thereof and load-supporting upright spring devices 36 carried respectively by the transoms 13L, 13R in the region of the respectively opposite side frames 7R, 7L. The bosses 25L, 25R mate with recesses 23R, 23L in surfaces 21L, 21R. Interposed between the bosses 25L, 25R and recesses 23R, 23L is a pair of elastomeric pads 27, 29 interleaved by a hemispherical plate 31 and outwardly bounded by a hemispherical plate 33 and inwardly by hemispherical plate 35. Plates 31, 33, 35 are bonded to pads 27, 29 and plates, 33, 35 and are formed respectively with bosses 37, 39 which fit into mating recesses 41, 43 in side frame recesses 23L, 23R and transom bosses 25R, 25L respectively. Transom ends 19L, 19R support upright springs 36 outward of the side frames. The vehicle body underframe may have an H-section post 45, for transmitting draft forces from the bogie to the underframe while accommodating relative swivel movements between the underframe and the bogie, and also a pair of flat transverse elastomeric pads 47 interleaved by metal plates. Lateral movement of the bogie with respect to the underframe is resisted by brackets 51 where inner longitudinal surfaces mount elastomeric bumper blocks 53. In another form of bearing, each side frame may be formed with a substantially semicylindrical recess 55 having flat vertical longitudinal sides 57, Fig. 7, while the end portions of transoms 13L and 13R each have a depending semicylindrical boss 59 having flat vertical longitudinal sides 61. In a further pivot arrangement the side frames are formed adjacent their centres with opposing longitudinally spaced transverse abutments 65, inclined outwardly and upwardly from the vertical longitudinally of the bogie. Gusset-like ribs 67 on top of the side frames buttress abutments 65 against loads applied to their faces. The end portions of the transoms 13L<SP>11</SP>, 13R<SP>11</SP> are -each formed with a depending projection 69, Fig. 9, so that their transverse faces 70 are inclined upwardly and outwardly longitudinally of the bogie. The bogie may be driven by motors M through gear-boxes G.
