Abstract

1,258,993. Cigarette filters &c. CELANESE CORP. 5 Nov., 1969 [13 Nov., 1968], No. 54168/69. Heading D1R. A porous material suitable for making cigarette filters, tampons &c., is made by forming a suspension of discontinuous fibres preferably 1-3 m.m. long of, e.g. cellulose acetate and triacetate polyamides, polyesters, or polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile ethylene, propylene, vinyl chloride vinylidine chloride or viny acetate in a gas such as air mixed with a heat activated bonding agent, e.g. triacetin, dibutyl phthalate, ethyl glycolate, triethyl citrate, polyalkylene glycols and esters thereof and directing a turbulent stream of this suspension into a non-porous tube 14. A rod of fibres is formed in which at least 40% of the fibres are randomly arranged in planes normal or within 10‹ of this to the axis of the rod. The rod is conveyed by a porous tube formed by bringing together the edges of a travelling endless belt 18 to the heating chambers 28 and 30 through which heated fluid is passed to activate the binder and to a cooling chamber 32 to form a stable rod which may be cut into appropriate lengths by cutter 40.
