125,892. Baxter, W. Nov. 7, 1918. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Lathes.-A turret lathe of the vertical type has a hollow spindle F through which the work is fed by gravity. While the stock rests on a stop in one of the holes E in the turret C which is raised by a lever L until the collar S on the index pin G corresponding to the particular hole E engages a fixed stop H, the jaws C<2> are caused to grip the work by the downward pressure of an internally-tapered nose-piece D' operated by a handlever (not shown). The taper of the nose-piece D' is such that when the pressure is relieved, the work is still gripped. The turret C is rotatably and slidably mounted on the pillar A, and when it has been lowered sufficiently for the previous tool to clear the work, an inclined pivoted cam Q engages one of the bars J and rotates the turret into position for the operation of the next tool. As each tool is raised into contact with the work, it forces the spindle F upwards until the clutchpart B' engages the clutch-part W of the forward driving pulley, which is mounted on the stationary bush V. When the tool is lowered, the clutch-part A' and the reverse pulley X may be; brought into co-operation. The spindle F may be ;held normally in mid-position by a spring-supported roller T'. The pulleys W, X may be driven by one belt passing over guidepulleys E<1>, F<1>, G<1>. A holder I' having a ring- like portion H' pivoted on the pillar A may be provided for turning or parting tools, and may be moved by a handle J', adjustable stops M<1> determining the range of movement. A standard O<1> and guide O<2 >may be used to steady the upper end of the stock.
