Abstract

1,258,717. End-face seals. FORSHEDA GUMMIFABRIK A.B. 30 Jan., 1970 [31 Jan., 1969], No. 4565/70. Heading F2B. An arrangement for mounting and axially fixing a rubber shaft seal having a sealing lip adapted to bear axially against a housing sealing surface comprises a support 26, Fig. 3, against which an annular supporting surface on the rubber seal slides on rotation of the shaft, the support being so located in relation to the housing sealing surface that the sealing lip takes up the correct axial position in relation to the housing sealing surface after the shaft has'completed a single revolution. The support shown in Fig. 3 is rotational and arranged to engage a conical end face of the rubber seal; when the shaft starts rotating, the support pushes the remaining parts of the rubber seal towards the housing 22. The support may be formed integrally with the housing, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), as a detachable member 36, Fig. 5a, arranged to engage two annular supporting faces on the rubber seal, as an invertable metal washer or coil of wire 76, Fig. 9, arranged to engage a groove 79 during the mounting operation but invertable to the position shown chain-dotted thereafter. In Fig. 14, the support is L-shaped for engaging a recess and in other embodiments, Figs. 10a to 13 (not shown), the support is made of bent sheet metal and attached to the housing by spot welding. In Fig. 6, (not shown), a rubber shaft seal is mounted one each side of a partition wall for engagement therewith.
