In a roller conveyer for load-carrying platens 5, a beam 14 for hauling the platens and a beam 16 for holding the platens stationary when they are not engaged by the hauling beam 14 are raised and lowered by a single draw bar 12. Each of a plurality of cross shafts 8 is connected to the draw bar by an arm 9, the shaft also carrying arms 10, 11 which have rollers for engaging the undersides of the beams 14, 16. To move the platens 5 along a roller track 3, the arms 10 are moved to the vertical position by longitudinal movement of the draw bar 12, the beam 14 being raised so that slots 18 of U-shaped members on the beam engage depending flanges of transverse platen bars 7. This movement of the bar 12 also causes the arms 11 to pivot downwardly and projections 19 of the holding beam 16 move out of engagement with the platens as the beam 16 is lowered. The hauling beam 14 is then moved longitudinally by a distance equal to the pitch between each adjacent pair of platens. The platens having been moved along the track, the draw bar 12 is then moved in the opposite direction, the hauling beam members 17 are disengaged from the platens, the holding beam projections 17 are raised and the hauling beam 14, still in its lowered position, is longitudinally moved to its original position with the U-shaped members 17 located beneath the platen bars 7. Two such conveyers may be at an angle, normally a right angle, to one another, an intermediate section of roller track being alignable with the main tracks in turn. A conveyer may feed into the stream of a main conveyer by an intermediate section. In such a case, the holding beam may be replaced by automatically holding clamp means at each platen station in the feeding conveyer.
