Abstract

1,258,107. Rolling mills. SOC. NOUVELLE SPIDEM. 10 April, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 18556/69. Addition to 971,409. Heading B3M. A four-high prestressed rolling mill, in which prestressing jacks urge the rolls together with a constant force, incorporates roll gap adjusters positioned between the backing roll chocks, each adjuster having an upper and a lower ram. The two rams are housed in the vertical bore of a mounting block 18, the block being anchored at 8 to the adjacent housing upright 1. The upper ram includes two pistons 18 and 26, the lower piston 18 of which receives a threaded portion of the lower ram 39. Fluid is introduced into a space 33 between the pistons, the pressure of the fluid either being held constant, or being varied to adjust the roll gap to a desired value during rolling. To change the rolls of the mill, the fluid pressure is released and the ram 38 suitably rotated by a screw 42. The pressure in the prestressing jacks is also released. Since the pistons 18 and 26 are held against rotation, the overall length of the adjusters can be altered to allow the rolls to be removed. The pass line of the mill can be reset by changing wedges located between the lower backing roll chocks and the prestressing jacks. The drive for the screw 42 can be automatically controlled or programmed for both roll changing and for variation of the roll gap.
