Abstract
1,258,068. Inhibiting scale formation. W. R. GRACE & CO. Dec. 10, 1968 [Jan. 29, 1968], No. 58562/68. Heading C7E. A composition for inhibiting formation of alkaline earth salt scale in an aqueous system consists of (a) from 1 to 500 parts by weight of citric, tartaric, malic, maleic, malonic, fumaric, or glycolic acid or a mixture of two or more of these acids, and (b) from 1 to 10 parts by weight of a water-soluble organic polymer having repeated groups with the formula: - wherein R is H or Me, and R<SP>1</SP> is an amide or carboxyl group, and salts and esters thereof. The polymer is preferably polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polymethacrylamide, hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, hydrolyzed polymethacrylamide or a salt or ester thereof, having a M.W. of 200 to 15,000,000, preferably 1, 000 to 200,000. Formation of scale in aqueous systems is prevented by adding at least 0À1 ppm of the composition thereto, and scale which has already formed may be removed by treatment with an aqueous solution containing at least 0À5 wt per cent of the composition. The composition may have added to it an organo-phosphonic acid, e.g. amino tri (methyl phosphonic acid) or hydroxy ethylidene diphosphonic acid, or an antifoam, corrosion inhibitor, a biocide or a dispersion or solution acid.
