Abstract
1,257,965. Drying metal sponge. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP. 28 Jan., 1969 [12 Feb., 1968], No. 4700/69. Heading F4G. In a continuous process of drying reactive metal sponge (e.g. titanium, zirconium, hafnium) the metal sponge is continuously conveyed by a rotatable spiral conveyer through a heated evacuated chamber 15. The metal sponge is fed to the chamber 15 by vibration screw feeder 11 through rotating valves 12, 13 and 14, the space between valves 13 and 14 being evacuated. The metal sponge is conveyed through the chamber 15 by a screw conveyer and discharged through rotating valve 40 into container 41 to which argon is supplied during filling. The chamber 15 is heated by hot fluid (e.g. steam, chlorinated biphenyl) circulating in coils around the chamber. The chamber 15 may be evacuated by a liquid jet type pump. Argon may be fed to the chamber 15 in the event of a leak.
