1,257,130. Making aluminium wires; drawing; extruding. SCHWERMASCHINENBAU-KOMBINAT ERNST THALMANN VEB. 2 Dec., 1969, No. 58825/69. Headings B3A and B3P. An apparatus for producing aluminium wires comprises an extrusion press 1 having a die with a plurality of orifices arranged on a common circle, a first cooling device 2 having a chamber for each wire through which water and compressed air are passed and a drawing device 7, 8 and wire reeler 9 for each wire. At least twelve wires are extruded in the press 1. Each chamber 11 is supplied with water through openings 16 and with air through a centrally arranged conduit 13, the flow direction of the air being caused to reverse adjacent the die before entering the chamber 11. The wires are passed over tensioning rollers 3, through a water cooling tank 4 through storage devices 6 and drawn through drawing orifices 7 by drums 8. The wires are finally passed over tensioning rollers 15, length measuring devices 10 and wound on to spools 9. The tensioning rollers 3 are connected to a cut out device so that if the wire breaks or the tension is excessive, the apparatus is stopped and the wire arrested by devices 5. The dancer rollers of the storage device 6 regulate the speed of the drum 8 and spool 9 and operate limit switches to cut off the apparatus if the wire breaks.
