Abstract
1,257,044. Fluid extractor. CENTURY DISPOSABLE DEVICES Inc. 2 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 22568/69. Heading A5R. A fluid extractor comprises a vial 10, open at both ends, the forward end being closed by a resilient stopper 16, with a communicating channel leading from the vial 10 to a needle 23 mounted on the front end 22 of the stopper 16, the channel being closed by a web 20 with a slit 21, a moveable piston plug 24 having an actuator 26 moveable in the vial, and means for locking the actuator and plug in a retracted position. The locking means are provided by a pair of wings 30 joined to the actuator, and withdrawable through a slot 13, but on slight rotation of the actuator, unable to pass back through the slot. Alternatively, a sleeve (40), Fig. 5 not shown, with tapering sides is joined to the actuator 26, and is deformable to slide over the outside of the vial 10, and is shorter than the distance of travel of the piston plug 24, so that on fully withdrawing the piston plug 24 the sleeve (40) passes the end of the vial 10, returns to its original shape and abuts the rear end of the vial to form a locking means. The device is operated by withdrawing the piston to form a vacuum in the vial 10. The needle 23 is inserted in the patient or a fluid in a vessel and then the slit 21 is opened by pressure on the stopper 16, so that the fluid flows into the vial. To stop the flow, the pressure on the stopper 16 is released.
