A roll grinding machine comprises a bed 11, means 12, 12a rotatably supporting a roll R, a carriage 17 movable along the bed and carrying a grinding wheel head 26 having a power-operated spindle 77 arranged to receive a grinding wheel, and an assembly 82 including a second spindle 90 arranged to be mounted on the grinding head upon removal of the grinding wheel, a grooving cutter 101 on the second spindle, and means for driving the second spindle from the poweroperated spindle. As described, the machine has two grinding wheels 78 for grinding a rubbercovered calendering roll R which is supported on neck rests 12, 12a and is rotatably driven from a shaft 16 driven from a motor 14. Shaft 16 is connected by gearing and a clutch to a shaft 49 driving through gearing in a housing 56 a lead screw 30 engaging a nut 29 in the carriage 17 which is thereby moved along the bed 11. The lead screw is also connectable by a clutch to a second motor 65. The clutches are controlled by a circuit so that only one or the other is engaged at any one time so that either the motor 14 rotates both the roll and the lead screw, so that the movement of the carriage is synchronized to the rotation of the roll when the grooving cutter is mounted on the head, or the motor 14 rotates the roll and the motor 65 the lead screw whenthe roll is being ground. The grinding heads 26, 27 are adjustable to and from the roll and are mounted on pivots 28, movement of the carriage along the bed 11 causing pinions 128 engaging racks 129 to rotate and thereby rotate eccentric cams 121 to rock the grinding heads so as to crown the roll. The grinding wheel and cover 29 of the head 26 are removed and the assembly 82 bolted to the housing and a pulley 87 is mounted on the spindle 77 of the head. The assembly has a first housing 83 carrying a shaft 84 driven by a belt 88 from pulley 87 and drives through a belt 92 the spindle 90 which is in a second housing 89 and carries grooving cutters 101. The housing 89 is adjustable relative to the first housing about an axis perpendicular to the axis of the roll R to the helix angle of the grooves to be cut in the roll and is also adjustable longitudinally of the first housing.
