Abstract

[Also'in Divisions C3 and F4] When casting metals, e.g. steel, A1 the mould or runners are lined with impurities eliminated during the pretreatment of bauxite during A1 processing to protect them against the action of molten metal. The impurities are a red mud or red clay (obtained by decanting or filtering the red mud) that are mixed with water to form a viscous coating mixture which is brushed on to the moulds or runners to be coated. When coating cast iron ingot moulds, the moulds are cleaned, brushed with the coating mixture and heated to dry off the coating. The coating facilitates release of the cast ingot from the mould and improves the ingot surface.
