Abstract

Protective apparatus for protecting a load in an explosive atmosphere from high voltage or heavy current comprises parallel Zener diodes 3, 4 and 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> connected between the electrical conductors and earth to limit the voltage which can be developed at the load 5 (or 6 or 7) in the explosive atmosphere and current limiting devices in each conductor, each of which comprises a transistor 8 which is normally of low impedance but which assumes a high impedance when the current tends to become excessive due to the Zener effect of a diode 9. The apparatus also includes fuses 2, 2<SP>1</SP>.
