Flat glass having a modified surface characteristic is produced by supporting the glass 30 and advancing it past a body 33 of molten metal (e.g. a Pb/Cu alloy) which is maintained against the surface of the glass, passing an electric current through the glass from the body so as to modify the glass surface, further advancing the glass and bringing the treated surface into contact with an ancillary body 36 of molten metal which acts to remove any metal (e.g. Pb) deposited from the body 33. The ancillary molten metal body 36 may be of the same material as body 33, and is maintained at a lower temperature. The metal of body 33 is caused to migrate into the glass by passage of the electrical current. The process is particularly applicable to the float process, but either side of a sheet or ribbon of glass supported on rollers may be treated by the method, as the molten metal bodies 33, 36 cling to copper bars 31, 37 supported on rods 32, 38. The treatment with molten body 33 may be at 700-800‹ C. and that with body 36 at, e.g. 700‹ C.
