Abstract
1,256,595. Oxidation catalysts. B. P. CHEMICALS Ltd. 28 May, 1970 [24 June, 1969], No. 31775/69. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C2] Catalyst compositions in oxide form containing antimony for the vapour phase oxidation of propylene to acrolein, and in the oxide form containing molybdenum for the vapour phase oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid are used in the form of separate adjacent beds of granular or pelleted material within a single reactor shell to prepare acrylic acid from propylene. The antimony catalyst may contain one or more of vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, nickel, tin, cobalt, zinc, gallium, germanium, xlenium, copper, rubidium, yttrium, niobium, iridium, ruthenium, palladium, osmium and uranium, particularly antimony with tin or tin and vanadium. The molybdenum catalyst may contain one or more of antimony, vanadium, tin, titanium, bismuth, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, molybdenum, cadmium, tungsten, tellurium, uranium and thorium, particularly molybdenum and cobalt and molybdenum with cobalt and antimony. The catalysts are heat treated in a molecular oxygen containing gas and may be diluted with inert diluent material such as ceramic pellets.
