Abstract

1,256,554. Flail mowers. BLACKSTONE & CO. Ltd. 22 Sept., 1970 [23 Sept., 1969], No. 46753/69. Heading A1F. A rotor for a flail mower is provided with means for readily detaching the flails. The rotor comprises for equiangularly spaced tubes 15 arranged around a central horizontal tubular shaft 10 carrying stub shafts for drive purposes. A series of equispaced flanges 14 are welded to the shaft 10 and the tubes 15, and spacers 16 are located on the tubes 15 midway between alternate pairs of flanges. Flails 17 are fitted on the tubes 15 so that they follow a helical path around the rotor, each flail being mounted between a flange 14 and a spacer 16. Four cylindrical rods 18, each located parallel to a tube 15, serve as securing means for the flails 17, the rods passing through apertures 19 on the flanges 14 from one end of the rotor to the other. The rods 18 are lockable when a plate 20 engages a groove 21 in the rods, the plate being held in place by a nut and bolt 24, 22. The flails 17 are in the form of plates, having a blade portion 27 and a shank portion 26, the latter being in the form of an open loop fitting closely on a nylon sleeve 25 on the tube 15. When the rods 18 are locked, the flails 17 are free to pivot from position 17a to 17b (Fig. 3) through the normal operating position 17c radial to the axis of the shaft 10. The flails, the blade portions 27 of which are shaped as shown in Fig. 3, are arranged to have the cutting edges 29 of adjacent flails overlapping to avoid gaps, thus some of the flails are as shown in Fig. 2 and some have a stepped edge to one side. In other embodiments, the rods 18 can be omitted, making the tubes 15 removable to detach the flails, or the shaft 10 can be omitted.
