Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A blood sampling assembly comprises an evacuated tube 22 with a pierceable stopper 20, a tube holder 16 having an open end and carrying a double-ended needle 14, and a resilient tube 10, preferably of rubber, normally sealing the inner end of the needle 14 from at least the open end portion of the holder 16, the tube 10 being axially compressible as tube 22 is pushed into holder 16 to cause needle 14 to penetrate through the tube 10 and stopper 20 into tube 20 for taking a blood sample, tube 10 ressuming the sealing position shown on removing tube 22. The tube 10 may be provided with a reduced internal diameter portion adjacent its open end to seal on the outer surface of the needle 14. In alternative embodiments the resilient tube seals against a shoulder on the inner wall of the holder adjacent the open end of the resilient tube or intermediate its ends, and the holder is translucent and flexible adjacent the seal to permit flow of blood into the interior of the holder to thereby indicate correct location of the needle in a vein. The sample tube stopper may be provided with a recess in its outer face having an inwardly projecting ring for gripping the resilient tube to assist in restoring its shape as the sample tube is removed from the holder. The holder may have a threaded portion adjacent its open end for mating with a threaded portion on the sample tube stopper.
