A comminutor of the known type has fixed cutting combs 17 and movable cutter bars 15 carried by a drum, which is rotatably-driven about a vertical axis by a motor-12, and comprises coaxial rings 13 each formed with a plurality of slots arranged in circumferentially spaced sets. The slots of each set are vertically aligned. The sets of slots in different rings may be vertically staggered, so that cutting does not take place along the whole length at any given time. The slots have a length not greater than twenty four times their width.
