Abstract
1,256,419. Metal/oxygen cell. ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd. 18 May, 1970 [27 May, 1969], No. 26600/69. Heading H1B. In a primary metal/oxygen or metal/air cell, the anode 11 has an aperture 11a providing a reservoir for electrolyte. In Fig. 1, anode 11 is of porous zinc with added mercury. 19 is a helical current collector of copper or brass connected to terminal 16 at the top of the Figure. The anode is surrounded by separator 12 of porous P.V.C., polypropylene or regenerated cellulose, cathode 14 comprising a hydrophobic layer carrying catalyst and outer cover 15 of metal. Cathode 14 may be joined to plastics end caps 13 by use of an adhesive, by welding or by crimping. Terminals 16 may be copper or brass rivets attached to the end caps with the help of rigid metal washers 17 and sealing washers 18. The electrolyte may be aqueous KOH, optionally absorbed on a wick (not shown). In modifications shown in cross-section in Figs. 2 and 3, the anode aperture and current collector may be shaped to provide electrolyte reservoirs 11a between the anode and the current collector and space 11b within the current collector for passage of a cooling fluid, e.g. air. In other modifications, the anode may have a plurality of apertures (Fig. 4, not shown), the electrodes may be elliptical in cross-section, the electrodes may be planar with hemicylindrical edges, or the outer cover may enclose one end of the cell, the end cap being omitted and the electrode connected to the cover.
