A transmission mechanism between an input shaft 4 and an output shaft 5 comprises an intermediate shaft 12 carrying pulleys 7, 8 which are connected by belts 10, 11 with pulleys 6, 9 on shafts 4, 5 respectively, the shaft 12 being carried by a frame 13 which is urged in a direction to tension the belts 10, 11 by a spring 28, the tension of which may be adjusted by rotation of a handle 24. In a modification shown in Fig. 6, frame 13 is carried by an arm 30, 31 mounted at one end on a pivot shaft 32 and attached at the other end to a spring-urged bar 34, the tension of a spring 50 being adjustable by means of an adjusting nut 57 and lock nut 58. In a further modification, an automatic tension adjusting mechanism shown in Figs. 4 and 5 comprises clutch members 38, 45 located in recesses 39, 44 and adapted to permit axial movement of the bar 34 in the direction of arrow A but to resist movement in the opposite direction. Initial tension of a spring 50 is set by rotation of a nut 47 abutting a slidable element 42 housing clutch members 45. An adjuster 51 bears against element 42 and is connected to one end of a bar 53 which is pivotally connected at its opposite end eccentrically to pulley 9.
