Abstract

1,256,174. Combustion in fluidized beds. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 5 May, 1970 [16 May, 1969], No. 25013/69. Heading F4B. Coal or coke particles are burnt whilst traversing a plurality of fluidized beds contained in a common housing. In one form, Fig. 1, the particles pass sequentially over fluidized bed forming trays 2 to 10 and back to tray 2, the trays being horizontal or inclined downwardly in the direction of particle flow and the beds being fluidized by combustion air. Pneumatic lifters (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) raise the particles falling from the discharge end of a tray to the feed end of a succeeding tray. Fresh fuel, and/or returned fines separated from the exhaust gases leaving the housing, are fed to one or more of the lifters, which may also be provided with ash removal means. In another form, Fig. 4, superposed inclined or horizontal permeable membranes 47, 52 are used to form the beds which are fluidized by preheated air from inlet 51. Fuel from inlet 61 passes, whilst burning, over membrane 47 to well 56 to be pneumatically lifted on to membrane 52. Some ash from membrane 52 is recycled to membrane 47 the remainder discharging via outlet 62. Gases discharge through flue 63. More than one such pair of membranes may be mounted one on another in a common housing (Fig. 5, not shown), the fuel being supplied on to any one or more of the membranes. Water filled heat exchange tubes are located in the fluidized beds. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,173,563.
