An apparatus for making square bottom bags includes a reciprocable and heatable cutting and sealing bar 104 for detaching substantially triangular waste portions 108 from a thermoplastics web TW and a paper web PW, arranged transversely under the web TW, to which the heated waste portions 108 adhere and by which they are removed from the vicinity of the cutting and sealing bar 104. As shown in Fig. 1 the web TW, folded longitudinally, is subjected to the action of a gusseting mechanism 32, cut to produce notches 106 and transversely heat sealed and severed by a seal bar 22 and a rotating seal roll 30 opposed thereto positioned under the web TW. The cutting and sealing bar 104 is reciprocated by a piston and cylinder assembly 96 in timed relation with nip rolls 56 and 133 which are intermittently rotated to draw the paper web PW from a supply roll 82. A further piston and cylinder assembly 94 is provided to move the cutting and sealing bar 104 with its associated piston and cylinder assembly 96 a relatively substantial distance away from the thermoplastics web TW to prevent thermal damage to the web TW when the operation of the machine is interrupted. The paper web PW is held in position over a platen 122 by virtue of a vacuum applied to its underside through a series of ports 124. A silicone rubber insert 126, which acts as an anvil for the sealing and cutting bar 104 is arranged to underlie the webs TW and PW.
