Abstract

1,256,024. Digital transmission systems. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 4 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 59160/69. Heading H4P. [Also in Divisions G4-G6] A data transmission system comprises a plurality of stations 1-17 arranged in a closed loop, each station I-M including a by-pass (not shown in Fig. 1) that can be broken when the corresponding station receives or transmits signals; when signals are interchanged by two stations, the signal from one station passes around one portion of the closed loop, while the signal from the second station passes around the remaining portion of the loop. As described in relation to airline seat reservation, the system includes a central station 1 and area stations 2- 17 interconnected through modulators 18, 20, 22, 24 and demodulators 19, 21, 23, 25. All signals, which are in binary-coded-decimal form, are transmitted counterclockwise around the loop; an area station (illustrated in Fig. 2, not reproduced) receives and transmits signals in serial form, but converts them internally to parallel mode. If the central station 1 wishes to receive data, it transmits around the loop a SEND ADDRESS signal, all area stations desiring communication replying by transmitting their address. The centr al station 1 then interrogates these stations in turn by sending a control signal to instigate transmission of each data character. If the central station 1 wishes to send data to area station 4, this address is transmitted around the loop and decoded in area station 4, which then breaks its by-pass. Data transmission then occurs, instigated by control signals sent from area station 4 to the central station 1. The central station 1 instigates data transmission between pairs of area stations by sending a CALL signal around the loop, which is replied to by a TAKE signal from area stations desiring communication. A pair of area stations then interchange control and data signals. Each area station 2-17 (see also Fig. 2, which shows an area station) controls its by-pass with an AND gate (36); the area station is controlled by internal logic (39).
