Abstract

1,255,723. Depolymerization of cellulose ethers by electron irradiation. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 17 June, 1969 [18 June, 1968], No. 30682/69. Heading C3A. Water-soluble cellulose ethers are depolymerized by irradiating a layer of a free-flowing, particulate, water-soluble cellulose ether having a uniform depth adjusted to within 10% of the penetration depth of the beam, with a beam of accelerated electrons and thoroughly blending the thus-treated cellulose ether. The beam may be accelerated by a 0.3 to 10 Mev. accelerator. Preferably a cellulose ether, the 2 weight per cent aqueous solution of which has a viscosity at 20‹ C. of 50 centipoises, is irradiated and blended to prepare an irradiated cellulose ether, the 2 weight per cent aqueous solution of which has a viscosity at 20‹ C. of 2 to 25 centipoises. The cellulose ether depolymerized may be a C 1-4 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl ether such as methyl-, ethyl-, hydroxyethyl-, hydroxypropylmethyl-, or hydroxyethylmethyl cellulose ; or a carboxyalkyl cellulose such as carboxymethyl-, methylcarboxymethyl-, hydroxypropylcarboxymethyl-, carboxymethylhydroxyethyl or ethylhydroxyethylcellulose ether.
