Abstract
1,255,389. Retractable writing instruments. CONWAY STEWART & CO. Ltd. 10 Sept., 1970 [14 July, 1969], No. 35235/69. Heading B6P. A writing instrument such as a ball pen is projected and retracted by depression of a plunger 14 actuation of which causes tilting and axial movement of a latch member 16 so that the member 16 engages catch means 22 or 23 for holding the pen respectively in retracted or projected position under the action of a retracting spring 13, the catch means 22, 23 being provided on the inner surface of sleeve 15 fitted in the barrel 10 of the instrument and the member 16 having an undercut groove 16g on a head portion for engaging the catch means 22, 23. A deep conical or concave recess 16c in the latch member head is engaged at a by the inner end of the ink cartridge 11 under the action of the spring 13. A shallow depression 16d is provided in the other end of the member 16, and the adjacent end of the plunger 14 has a conical or concave depression 14c. With the pen in a retracted position as shown, operation of the plunger 14 causes the part b thereof to abut the end of the member 16 exerting a force along line c to move the member 16 and pen forwardly until the groove 16g passes beyond the catch 23, the latch tilting slightly under the rearward thrust of the cartridge 11 so that the groove 16g is axially aligned with the catch 23. Upon release of the plunger 14, the groove 16g engages the catch 23, and the end of the cartridge 11 is moved under the action of spring 13 to bear against the side d of the conical recess 16c, whereby the member 16 is caused to take up the position shown dotted with the pen held in projected position. Upon the next actuation of the plunger to move the groove 16g out of engagement with the catch 23, the cartridge will act on the member 16 so as to cause it to tilt to a position opposite to that shown in full lines. Thus, when the plunger 14 is released, the member 16 will engage the catch 22 and be moved back to its original position.
