A gramophone for a doll includes a record 29 with a number of separate interleaved tracks and a rebound arrangement associated with pick-up arm 17 for randomly selecting the track to be played. The gramophone turntable, which supports the record 29, is mounted on spindle 46 and includes an annular groove 52 for carrying a winding drawstring 53 which energizes a spring motor including a spring 76 extending between a skirt 62 on the rotor and a drum 77 on which the spring is coiled when the motor is not energized. The rotor is coupled via belt 71 to a brake-controlled speed governor 73. Pick-up arm 17 is provided with stylus 27 and is engaged by an extension 35 of a tubular member 36 which is spring urged towards the pick-up arm and coupled to sound reproducing cone 42. On pulling the string to wind the motor the pick-up arm is swung outwardly towards the edge of the record and engages a resilient stop from which it rebounds on to an area of the record carrying a part of each record track. The record carries five interleaved tracks arranged such that each message portion commencing on radial line 111 is preceded by a track portion which is unrecorded or carries sounds appropriate to the associated message. These latter portions form the first ten grooves in the record sector between lines 111 and 112 and the stylus is dropped into an area 119 cut by line 114 bisecting the sector.
