Abstract

1,254,817. Drying moist webs by means of heated rollers. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. 22 June, 1970 [24 June, 1969], No. 30212/70. Heading F4G. A paper web 4 is dried by passing it around heated rotatable rollers 1, 2 and 3 arranged in three horizontal rows, the rollers 2 being arranged between adjacent pairs of the rollers 1 and 3, wherein the diameters of the rollers 1 and 3 are larger, i.e. between 1¢ and 3 (preferably 2) times larger, than the diameters (preferably 2 metres) of the vertically staggered rollers 2, so that the free runs of web 4 between rollers 1 and 3 are kept small enough to prevent tearing of the web 4 while the effective contact area of the rollers is increased. The diameter of the upper rollers 3 may differ from that of the lower rollers 1, and the diameters of the rollers 1 and 3 may vary between each other. The rollers may have felt covers, and comprise jackets heated by a heating medium. The web 4 passes (while supported by a felt web) between two press rollers 5 and 6, and is supported by felt webs 7. A drying hood 8 contains radiant heaters or supplies hot air.
