Abstract
1,254,326. Nitrilotriacetonitrile and methylene-bis-iminodiacetonitrile. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. 23 Jan., 1969 [25 Jan., 1968], No. 3780/69. Heading C2C. Nitrilotriacetonitrile or methylene-bis-iminodiacetonitrile or mixtures thereof are prepared by adding ammonia and hydrogen cyanide simultaneously to acidified liquid phase formaldehyde maintained at a pH between 0 and 2, the temperature being controlled between 10‹ and 40‹ C. to produce methylene-bis-iminodiacetonitrile or a preponderance thereof or between 10‹ and 100‹ C. (and over 40‹ C. in at least the later period of reaction) to produce nitrilotriacetonitrile or a preponderance thereof. When it is desired to produce nitrilotriacetonitrile or mixtures in which this preponderates, the temperature during the addition of hydrogen cyanide and ammonia is desirably maintained between 30‹ and 35‹ C. and thereafter the temperature is maintained between 60‹ and 65‹ C. The temperature is preferably maintained at 30‹ to 40‹ C. throughout when it is desired to produce methylene-bis-imino-diacetonitrile or mixtures in which this preponderates. Methylenebis-iminodiacetonitrile may be converted to nitrilotriacetonitrile by reaction with liquid hydrogen cyanide and formaldehyde at temperatures of 50‹ to 95‹ C.
