Power losses in a lamination of a ferromagnetic alloy, e.g. silicon-iron or molybdenumiron, are reduced by forming in at least one face of the recrystallized coarse-grained lamination a plurality of substantially parallel grooves so as to alter the local structure of the crystallites. The spacing between grooves is preferably less than the average size of the orientated grains and may be between 0À1 and 1À0 mm., the grooves having a maximum depth of 40 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> mm., and those on one face may extend in the direction of rolling while those on the opposite face are transverse thereto. A stress-relieving heat treatment at recrystallization temperatures may be given during and/or after the operation of forming the grooves. In an example, a doubleorientated lamination is formed on one side with grooves using a scriber. In another example, the grooves are scribed on both sides and the lamination is annealed at 700‹ C. for 30 minutes after scribing. Emery is used in another example, the lamination being triplescratched on one side and single-scratched on the other.
