Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and Dl] A composition used in the treatment of cellulosic textile materials comprises a waterin-oil emulsion of which the dispersing phase is a liquid hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon volatile at temperatures below 150‹C and of which the dispersed phase is a clear to opalescent aqueous solution of one or more water-soluble methylol compounds of urea or a cyclic alkylene urea having on average more than 1.5 methylol groups per molecule and/or their ethers with an aliphatic saturated monohydric alcohol having 1-4 carbon atoms, and of an acid or acid-forming catalyst, the emulsion containing an emulsifier which is miscible in the dispersed phase and which has an HLB number of 3-13, and drying it. The methylol compound may be dimethylol dihydroxyethylene urea, methylolated ethanolamine dimethylene diurea or dimethylol urea which may be etherified with methanol, and the catalyst may be a salt of ammonia, an amine or metal with a strong inorganic acid, e.g. zinc chloride or nitrate, 2-amino-2-methyl propan-1-ol hydrochloride or ammonium chloride or nitrate. Suitable hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons are benzene, benzines, trichlorethylene, tetra chlorethylene and 1, 2, 2 trifluorotrichlorethene, and the emulsifier may be oleic acid with 7 ethenoxy groups, stearic acid mono-ethylamide with 7 ethenoxy groups, coconut fatty acid propanolamide with 4 polyoxyethylene groups, stearic acid triethanolamine ester with 2 polyoxyethylene groups octadecylamine ethoxylated with 7 glycol ether groups, the sodium salt of dodecyl sulphuric acid ester, a mixture of oleic acid monoethanol amide with 7 polyoxyethylene groups with dodecylamine with 3 polyoxyethylene groups, a mixture of the polyglycol ether of cetyl alcohol and of stearyl alcohol each with 5 polyoxyethylene groups, or a mixture of mineral oil sulphonate of molecular weight 450 and isopropoxy propylamine salt of dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid.
