A photographic type-composing apparatus comprises means for scanning an image of a control marking associated with a selected character and means controlled by the scanning means for moving the sensitive recording surface an appropriate distance to provide a predetermined character spacing. In a preferred form the characters and associated control markings 23 are provided on a rotatable matrix disc 13. Required characters are coded on input tape 54 and the disc is stopped by brake 49 and detent 50 when a required character is aligned with the exposure station. The position of the disc is monitored by photo sensitive elements 51 which detect code marks 48 on the disc. The disc may have associated therewith shutters 24, 25, Fig. 3A, which serve to protect the recording surface from the exposing light as the required character is brought into position and to expose the control marking 23 for scanning while still preventing light from the character image 22 reaching the recording surface. The projected image of the control marking 23, Fig. 4, is scanned by photo-cell 4 mounted on movable carriage 21. As long as the cell 4 is activated by detection of area 23 the film 27 is transported. When cell 4 passes beyond area 23 the film is arrested and the imaging exposure made by movement of the above mentioned shutters. To change the character spacing a movable shield may be used to obscure part of area 23 thus cutting down the amount of cell activation and thus cutting down the amount of film transported. In a further embodiment the cell is deactivated as normal when it passes beyond the left hand edge, Fig. 4, of area 23 thus stopping film transport, but the transport is initiated by variable means not associated with the position of the right hand edge of area 23.
