Abstract
1,252,731. Coin testing. LONDON TRANSPORT BOARD, and R. DELL. 10 Oct., 1968, [26 July, 1967], No. 34386/67. Heading G4V. A coin 5 inserted into a shoot 1 is supported in position on continuously driven rollers 2, 3 while diameter and thickness sensing rollers 4, 20 move against the coin, the movement of the rollers producing electrical signals which actuate acceptance/rejection means to alter the path of the coin. The movement of the rollers is triggered by a photo-cell 15 which is obturated by the coin when it reaches the rollers 2, 3. Mirrors 16, 24 mounted on the supports of the rollers 4, 20 respectively, each reflect light from a source into one of a plurality of photo-cells. Each photocell produces a characteristic output signal indicative of the diameter or thickness of the coin respectively. A milling detector 28 includes a flexible arm 29 in contact with the milled edge of the coin 5 which vibrates the arm to energize an electromagnetic transducer 30, 32 to produce pulse output signals whose frequency corresponds to the spacing of the sills on the milled edge of the coin. Tuned circuits (e.g. 38, 39, Fig. 7, not shown) respond to the frequency of the signals from the milling detector transducer (32) and outputs from the tuned circuits are combined with the output signals from the thickness and diameter measuring photo-cells (e.g. 19a, 19b) to produce D.C. signals indicative of the detection of coins having a value of e.g. 3d, 6d respectively. The circuit arrangements for 1/-, 2/- and 2/6 coins are analogous. The D.C. output signals, together with outputs from the photo-cell 15 positioned near the coin centre, and a peripheral photo-cell 15a, are applied to a solenoid 33 which operates a spring loaded plunger 36 to eject the coin from the rollers 2, 3. The same signals actuate a solenoid (44, Fig. 7, not shown), to close a flap in the shoot floor so that the ejected coin proceeds to a coin container or storage tube. In the absence of outputs characteristic of genuine coins, a time delay circuit (43) triggered by one or both photo-cells 15, 15a actuates the solenoid 33 to eject the coin via the open flap in the shoot floor to a reject station. Washers are detected since they actuate the photo-cell 15a. In an alternative embodiment, the sensing rollers 4, 20 are associated with one pair of driven rollers and the milling detector with a further pair of rollers.
