Abstract

1,252,586. Change-speed gear. BORG-WARNER CORP. 23 Oct., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 50284/68. Heading F2D. Three reduced ratios, direct-drive and one reverse are provided in a torque-converterdriven automatic transmission on a motorvehicle by first, second and third sun-ring planet trains 60, 61, 62, operating singly and in compounded pairs under control of two selective input clutches 32, 33 and three disc brakes 90, 120, 140, the following gear elements being permanently connected together. The first and second suns 60, 61; final output shaft 30, third and second planet-carriers and first ring gear 66; third sun 62 and second ring 71. Ratios are as follows, the front clutch 32 being engaged for all forward ratios. First, the third train 62 acts alone, with input sun and with the ring gear 81 reacting on a one-way brake 94 for automatic low or on a friction disc brake 90 for two-way manual low, ratio 3À57; second, the brake 120 holds the first planet-carrier 68, and the first and second trains 60, 61 compound, with input to the second ring 71 and output to the connected first ring and second planet carrier, ratio 2À26; third, the second train 61 acts alone, with input to its ring 71, output carrier, and sun braked at 140, ratio 1À46 fourth, the second clutch 33 is engaged additionally to the first 32, for lock-up directdrive. For reverse, the second and third trains 61, 62 compound, with input through the clutch 33 alone to the second sun 61, and third ring braked at 90. The disc-clutches and brakes are fluidpressure operated by annular pistons, those for the clutches 32, 33 being carried in a common input housing 34, with wavy return springs 59 arranged radially inwards of the clutch discs. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,181,929.
