[Also in Division G2] Compounds are disclosed of the formula wherein X is H, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are methyl or ethyl, the radicals b together represent a fused benzene or tetrahydrobenzene ring, and R<SP>111</SP> is a phenoxyethyl radical substituted in the para position by 1: 3: 3-trimethylpentyl or 1:1:3:3- tetramethylbutyl, or which is a 2-tetradecyl-4- chloro-5-methylphenoxyethyl radical. The compounds are photographic colour couplers, The compound wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are methyl. the radicals b are a fused benzene ring and R<SP>111</SP> is 4<SP>1</SP> - (1:3:3 - trimethylpentyl) - phenoxyethyl is made by heating phenyl 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate with 4<SP>1</SP> - (1:3:3 - trimethylpentyl)phenoxyethyl N - (2:5 - dimethoxy - 4 - aminophenyl)urethane obtained by reduction of the corresponding 4-nitro-compound made by reacting 5-nitro-2- amino-1:4-dimethoxy benzene with 4<SP>1</SP>-(1:3:3- trimethylpentyl)phenoxyethyl chloroformate.
