Abstract
1,252,179. Gas-blast switches. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 31 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 16686/69. Heading H1N. A gas-blast circuit-breaker comprises a main current-breaking "gap" 1 which recloses automatically after opening and a voltage isolating "gap" 2 in series with the gap 1 and which opens when the gap 1 is open and is used to close the circuit through the circuit-breaker. The circuit-breaker is filled with compressed gas and the gap 2 has rounded electrodes 11, 12, a plug contact 13 co-operating with a socket contact 14, an electrodynamic means 19 to initiate the closing movement of the contact 13 and an energy storage device in a high potential situation to supply the means 19. In the arrangement shown, opening of the circuitbreaker is initiated by energizing an electrodynamic means, i.e. a coil 18 to move a piston 36 carrying a moving main contact 7, gas pressure on the piston 36 completing the opening movement. Gas flowing through a channel 37 in the contact 7 opens a valve 39 to vent a cylinder 40 so that gas pressure opens the voltage isolating contact 13. The gas through the channel 37 causes the increase in pressure behind the piston 36 which recloses the main contacts 7, 9 and the valve 39 closes the vent. Reclosing of the circuit-breaker is effected by energizing the coil 19 to initiate the movement of a piston 42 carrying the contact 13. This initial movement moving a valve seat 44 away from a washer 45 so that gas pressure can act on the whole of the piston 42. Each coil 18, 19 is energized when a respective charged capacitor 20, 21 discharges through a photo-thyristor 32, 33, triggered by light through a light guide 34, 35 from lamps 30, 31. Each capacitor is charged by means of a diode 28, 29, a transformer 26, 27 and a generator 24, 25. The generators may be driven by a motor 22 through an insulating shaft 23, by a gas turbine or by an hydraulic motor. Alternatively, the capacitors may be charged from a source, situated at earth potential, through voltage transformers.
