Abstract

1,251,946. Discharge arrangement for hydrocydones. CELLECO A.B. 12 Feb., 1970 [13 Feb., 1969], No. 6791/70. Heading B2P. A cylindrical discharge chamber 5 into which the heavy fraction from a hydrocyclone 1 is fed in a rotary flow is formed in its bottom 10 with an open groove 11 extending around a part only of the circumference of the chamber and leading to a discharge outlet 12, communication between the chamber 5 and the groove 11 being controlled by a shutter plate 14 rotatable about the axis of the chamber for varying the cross-sectional area of the entrance to the groove in the plane of the shutter, the arrangement being such that, in use, the heavy fraction rotates in one direction (arrow 7) within the discharge chamber and is caused to reverse its direction (arrow 20) when entering and passing along the groove. The chamber 5 is located in a casing 8 in the lower part of which is a cylindrical body 9 the upper plane of which forms the bottom 10 of the chamber. The groove 10 which is bounded radially outwards by the wall of the casing increases in width and depth from the level of the plane 10 to that of the outlet 12. The shutter plate 14 is the form of a disc provided with a peripheral recess limited by edges a and b and is rotatably adjustable by means of a shaft 15 and a handle 16, a lock nut 17 being provided to retain the plate in the required position. In use, the heavy fraction discharging from the outlet 4 of the hydrocyclone into the chamber 5 in the direction of the arrow 7 is spread radially outwards by a baffle 13 and flows down the chamber and around the edge a of the plate 14 (arrow 19) and through the groove in the direction of the arrow 20. The edge a may be bevelled. The outlet quantity can be controlled by rotating the plate 14 so that the edge a is situated over different cross-sections of the groove 11, Figs. 7-9 (not shown). The shutter plate 14 and the groove 11 may be modified by giving them different circumferential dimensions, Figs. 10-14 (not shown). In Fig. 15, the peripheral recess in the shutter plate 14b is replaced by holes 18b. In a modification, the bottom body 9 may extend downwards out of the casing or may be replaced by a bottom portion of the casing. Instead of the chamber 5 being coaxial with the outlet 4 of the hydrocyclone, the heavy fraction may be fed to the chamber through a tangential inlet.
