Abstract

1,251,749. Gas turbine engine combustion chambers. BENNES MARREL. Sept. 12, 1969 [Oct.18, 1968], No.45060/69. Headings F1G and F1L. The invention relates to gas turbine engine combustion equipment of the kind comprising an inner flame tube and an outer casing, air-flowing upstream through the annular air passage and combustion gases flowing downstream through the flame tube. The equipment shown comprises a pair of combustion chambers disposed side-by-side in vertical disposition each being in accordance with the invention. Each chamber comprises an outer casing 7 and an inner flame tube 8, air under pressure from the compressor of the engine flowing from space 10 in an upstream direction as indicated by arrows 51 and combustion gases flowing through the flame tube in a downstream direction as indicated by arrows 52. The outer casing 7 is closed at its upstream end by a frusto-conical cap 11, a fuel injector 12 being mounted thereon. The flame tube comprises a cylindrical end portion 14 into which the fuel injector 12 projects, a series of swirl-producing vanes 22 being disposed in the end portion 14. The flame tube comprises also a larger diameter cylindrical portion 16 connected to the end portion 14 by a frusto-conical portion 15, primary air inlet openings 25 and 27, 28 being formed in the frusto-conical and cylindrical portions 15 and 16 respectively. A divergent portion 30 extends from the cylindrical portion 16 being formed with secondary air inlet openings 31 and with cooling air slots 32. A frusto-conical deflector 35 is disposed around the divergent portion 30 in the region of the cooling air slots 32. A second frusto-conical portion 17 is provided between the cylindrical portion 16 and the divergent portion 30, secondary air inlet openings formed by short tube members 29 extending therethrough. The two flame tubes are inter-connected by a duct 36 having an expansion piece 37. The flame tube 8 terminates in a cylindrical portion 19. The fuel injector 12 comprises a solenoid-controlled valve member 39 which in the closed position engages against seat 40 so that fuel supplied through inlet 41 returns through spill passage 43, and which in the open position engages against seat 45 to close the spill passage and open the port 40 for fuel-flow to the nozzle 13. The flame tube comprises also a spark igniter 47 which is urged by spring 49 to an operative position 47a Fig.6 when the chamber is inoperative but which is moved to the retracted position 47b by gas-pressure acting on the piston 48 once combustion is started.
