Abstract
1,251,737. Polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated compounds. TOYO SODA MFG. CO. Ltd. 12 Dec., 1969 [14 Dec., 1968], No. 60799/69. Heading C3P. Vinyl monomers, e.g. vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, and ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and chloroprene are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst prepared by mixing a trialkyl boron with a chlorohydrocarbon in a molar ratio of 1 : 0.2 to 1 : 8. In the examples (a) acrylonitrile, ethylacrylate and vinyl chloride are each polymerized in n-hexane using a mixture of tributylboron and CCl 4 ; (b) chloroprene and vinylacetate are each polymerized in benzene using a mixture of tri-n-butylboron and CCl 4 ; (c) vinyl chloride is polymerized in water containing hydroxypropylmethylcellulose using a mixture of tri-n-butyl boron and carbon tetrachloride; (d) chloroprene/acrylonitrile and styrene/vinyl chloride copolymers are prepared in benzene using a mixture of tri-n-butylboron and carbon tetrachloride; (e) vinyl chloride is polymerized in n-hexane using a mixture of triethylboron or tri-n-hexylboron in CCl 4 .
