Abstract

1,251,686. Seals. SVENSKA PRECISIONS-VERKTYG A.B. 6 Dec., 1968 [11 Dec., 1967], No. 58048/68. Heading F2B. A pump for liquids containing solid particles comprises a main first packing 50 which is surrounded by an oil chamber 48, a second packing 78 of elastomeric material which is connected to the pump housing and co-operates with a rotary surface to provide a space 86 between the two packings, and a slot 74 provided between the impeller 18 and the pump housing, the second packing having an annular surface 80 under axial pressure and an annular undercut lip which in operation permits communication between the slot and the said space so that the pressure on the forward side of the main packing is reduced to effect lubrication of the main packing. The main packing 50 consists of a stationary ring 52 engaged by a rotary twoelement ring 54 carried by an elastomeric sleeve 56 and a rigid spring-urged retainer 58. The second packing 78 may be connected to, or formed integrally with, a rubber protective facing 62 which is reinforced by a member 66 and secured to the pump cover 26 by means of screws 72 and a snap-on flange 70. During rotation of the impeller 18, a reduced pressure is created in the slot 74 causing the sealing lip to open to evacuate the space 86 and thereby effect lubrication of the main packing 50 with oil from the chamber 48. When the pump stops, the reduced pressure in the space 86 is retained by the sealing lip which is pressed into sealing contact by the higher pressure in the slot 74.
