Abstract

1,251,394. Ignition systems. HONEYWELL Inc. Oct. 9, 1968 [Oct. 25, 1967], No. 47935/68. Headings F1B. An ignition system comprises a step-up ignition transformer having a primary winding 12 and a secondary winding 11, a pair of terminals connected in circuit with the secondary winding and adapted to be connected to ignition spark gap means 15, an impedance 40 connected between the terminals to complete a circuit through the secondary winding and ignition pulse generating means 20, 26 having an input to initiate operation thereof and having a high voltage output connected to the primary winding. Checking pulse generating means 21, 24 has a low voltage output connected to produce current flow through the circuit including the secondary winding and the impedance. Current responsive means 30 is responsive to the current flow and connected to control the input to initiate operation of the ignition pulse generating means. A circuit discontinuity such as the secondary winding of the ignition transformer may well be of the type which would at the higher ignition pulse voltage allow a spark to exist at the discontinuity and then the valve 16 would be energized even if the electrodes 15 are shorted. In the system of the invention an output exists at the secondary winding of the transformer 31, as a result of the low voltage checking current pulse, only when circuit continuity exists.
